Lee Hyoungwoo, also known as Luke Lee, was born in 1966 in Gwangju, South Korea, and studied fine art at Hongik University. From an early age, he developed a passion for drawing, which later evolved into a distinctive painterly language rooted in mythology, allegory, and fictional narratives derived from social and historical contexts.
His paintings are populated by exaggerated figures and animals with playful, sometimes grotesque expressions. Rendered with bold brushstrokes and vibrant colors, these characters inhabit flexible, dynamic compositions rather than rigid narrative structures. While the scenes often appear humorous and lighthearted, they subtly reflect on human behavior, society, and the contradictions of contemporary life.
A defining aspect of Lee’s work is its non-interventionist approach. His narratives do not impose meaning or moral conclusions; instead, they remain open-ended, inviting viewers to engage freely and complete the story through their own imagination. In this sense, fiction becomes a space of freedom—one that offers emotional insight beyond literal reality.
Based in Gwangju, Lee Hyoungwoo continues to exhibit actively both in Korea and internationally, including Australia. He has held 19 solo exhibitions and participated in over 110 group exhibitions, as well as numerous art fairs, establishing a sustained and dynamic presence on the contemporary art scene.
