At forty, he left Korea to study art abroad, beginning a formative period in New York at the Art Students League, followed by further studies in Europe.
While contemporary art increasingly favored abstraction and installation, Song deliberately turned toward the foundations of Western painting, immersing himself in the study of Old Masters—particularly Rembrandt. Through years of repeated visits to major museums, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, he internalized portraiture not as mere representation but as a profound means of understanding humanity.
